Our tenth anniverary!
This month, April, Burlington Street Ministries is 10 years old.
Burlington Street Ministries officially launched in 1995 after speaking at Maranatha Church about what was happening on our streets, and 5 volunteers joined me that day. We are 10 years old, with a name, but I personally sometimes with one or two people have been ministering on the streets downtown Burlington for 31 years!
After that Sunday in April of 1995, speaking at Maranatha Church and launching Burlington Street Ministries, we were engaged for 3 years with a battle over the streets by a large number of Satanist that use to hang out on Church Street. They ruled the streets until we set up every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday Nights. They got very angry with us, tried to burn down our table one night, countered all of our tracts, we remember well the tract they passed out for weeks titled "Satan's simple plan to go to Hell".
The March for Jesus, and the large amount of volunteers we had for the first 4-5 years, gained us victory, we chased the Satanist off the street, seen an incredible openness for a few years we have not seen in a very long time.Now, things have changed, we have very few volunteers, and our financial support has dropped to almost nothing. Churches who once had us in their budgets, now hardly know we even exist. I want to turn this around.
Our streets are troubled more than they were 10 years ago. The Satanist may be gone, but the drug dealers have moved in, the gangs have moved in and Christians are mostly gone now, rarely anyone outside our 5 volunteers ever come down any more.We are in danger of loosing the battle down here, but we pray, that we can turn this trend around.
We have 4 mission groups coming up from North Carolina Churches this year to help, and we are hoping for some local help also. We are getting back to spending more than just Friday nights out on the street.We are seeing encouraging signs, people coming to Christ, an openness that is beginning to happen. We are excited about the possibilities this year.
10 years is a milestone! 10 years of a consistent Gospel presence out on the streets! Help us celebrate what God has done for 10 years, also 31 years!
Pray for us as we prepare for our summer outreach open night on Friday, May 27th.
Pray for the 4 groups coming up from North Carolina this year.
Pray for our financial needs. We desperately need more monthly support! We need $1100.00 to do our summer outreach, for permits, bibles, insurance, and other materials.
Pray for me, as I deal with some ongoing health issues, as well as my wife Donna, as she is mostly home bound now and it is difficult not having her active in Ministry with me.
Most of all, pray for souls! For that is what we are all about!
