Christmas on the Streets
9 days to Christmas! Walking down Church Street surely is a "Winter Wonderland". With the snow, the beautiful Christmas lights, the stores all decorated for the holidays, one can feel the "Christmas Spirit" in the air! It really is the most wonderful time of the year!
But for some, it can be heartbreaking, and a reminder of just how much they have lost. To the homeless, it is like looking through a window and seeing everyone enjoying themselves and happy, but they are outside and cannot get in. For the poor working families who have to decide each month weather to pay the electric bill or eat, they also have to explain to their children why Santa is not coming to their house this year.
Wednesday, I meet a man who wanted to know if I had any McDonalds Gift Certificates left, because Saturday the 17th was his and his wife's anniversary and he would like to take her out for a meal rather than go to the soup kitchen.
This really hit me because Saturday is my wife and my 28th wedding anniversary. I was thinking how blessed I am because we have reservations to a very nice restaurant, and will spend a bit of money on a nice meal, and we will have family coming over latter that evening to celebrate with us. And this man will be taking his wife to McDonalds, and he feels blessed to be able to do that!
Christmas is hard for those on the streets and for those who are "almost" there. But I am so thankful to God that we can be there for these folks to give them a bit of Cheer not only during Christmas, but all year long. Thank you all for your wonderful support of Burlington Street Ministries this year.
We are just about out of McDonalds gift Certificates, we are way down on donations this year, so please think about us the Christmas Season.
